Expanding Perspectives: Introducing Positional Thinking and Linguistic Coaching Techniques

In our work with clients, we’ve found that growth and clarity often emerge not from solving problems outright but from exploring perspectives — shifting angles, reframing questions, and engaging with the complexity of the challenge at hand. To support this, we’ve developed and refined techniques designed to guide strategic visioning and coaching.

Today, we’re excited to introduce three of these: Positional Thinking, Language-Based Perspective Coaching, and Linguistic Reframing Exercises.

Positional Thinking: Mapping Perspectives

Positional Thinking is a tool that allows us to visualize relationships and dynamics within a given context. Borrowing from geometric systems of thought, it focuses on relative positioning — who or what is at the centre, the forces at play, and the journey being charted.

For example, in a strategic workshop, Positional Thinking might involve mapping the positions of key stakeholders, identifying opposing forces, or exploring the journey from the current state to the desired future. This spatial approach creates clarity by making the invisible visible, helping teams see the bigger picture and identify new pathways forward.

Language-Based Perspective Coaching: Finding Resonance in Words

Words are powerful stuff. The way we phrase a goal, a mission, or even a challenge can significantly impact how we perceive it — and how we act on it. Language-Based Perspective Coaching is a technique that leverages this power. It involves iterating on language — experimenting with phrasing to uncover deeper insights and provoke new ways of thinking.

In practice, this might look like rewording a mission statement to see how different expressions feel or creating intentional shifts in framing to spark fresh perspectives. Fixating on a word at a time and iterating on variations. Often, the process is unsettling — it challenges assumptions and exposes blind spots. But it’s also profoundly revealing, uncovering phrases that resonate deeply and align teams around a shared vision.

Why These Techniques Matter

At their core, these techniques are about fostering clarity, alignment, and creativity. They help our clients move beyond linear, problem-focused thinking to engage with complexity in a way that feels both practical and meaningful. By blending visual, relational, and linguistic approaches, we aim to support not just solutions but transformative shifts in perspective.

Whether it’s helping a leadership team envision the future of their organization, guiding a founder through strategic ambiguity, or supporting a group in navigating conflicting priorities, these tools provide the structure and space for deeper understanding and purposeful action.

What’s Next?

Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing more about how these techniques work in practice, along with case studies and reflections from our clients. If you’re curious about how Positional Thinking, Language-Based Perspective Coaching, or Linguistic Reframing Exercises could help you or your team, we’d love to hear from you.

For now, I invite you to wundr: What might shift in your world if you saw it from a new position, or spoke about it in new words?
